The Effect Of University Students' Internet Addiction On Academic Achievements

One of the most important factors affecting social life in recent years is the usage of the internet. Internet usage, which is effective in adults' social relationships and lives, can provide successful results when used for educational purposes. However, internet usage, which has recently turned into addiction, causes many psychological health problems and negatively affects the academic success of students. With this research, it is aimed to determine whether the academic achievement of university students changes according to internet addiction. In order to achieve this aim, the Young Internet Addiction Test Short Form was applied to 525 students studying at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University. The applied questionnaires were analyzed through the SPSS program. Survey research, correlational research and causal comparison research methods, which are quantitative research methods, were used in the research. The obtained data were interpreted using data analysis programs. As a result of the analysis on the data, it was concluded that most of the students who answered the questionnaire had access to the internet via their mobile phones and students had approximately 2-6 hours of internet usage per day. As a result, a positive relationship was determined between the academic achievement of the students participating in the research and internet addiction.
